Jacob L. Loose Park

The third-largest city park in Kansas City, Jacob L Loose Park is a great spot to stroll, run, or picnic. It offers a lake, shelter house, Civil War markers, tennis courts, a water park, and a Rose Garden with 130 varieties of roses.

The park was established in 1927 by the wife of the founder of the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company, Jacob Loose. The statue honoring her husband is located at the entrance to the park near 51st and Wornall Road. You’ll be glad you read this!

History

Jacob L Loose Park is a beautiful & popular park that is a great place to spend the day with your family. The park features a lake, playground, paved walking paths, picnic areas, and lots of green space.

The park was established in 1927 after Ella Loose purchased the land in honor of her husband, Jacob. He was a successful businessman & philanthropist who founded the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company.

He was also a generous benefactor of many causes including Children’s Mercy Hospital, Swope Park, Gillis Orphanage & WCA. His wife, Ella, was a society dowager and became “Kansas City’s No. 1 Society Dowager.”

Today, the 75-acre Loose Park is one of the city’s most popular parks. It was a significant site for the Battle of Westport where Confederate forces were routed by Union troops in an area that is now Loose Park. The park has a historic mansion on the property that was built by Jacob and Ella. The four-story mansion features the original Italian tile flooring, a marble foyer with brass railings, and eight of the original 11 fireplaces.

The 74-acre parcel of land that is Loose Park was bought by Ella Loose with the intention of giving it to the city as a public park in honor of her late husband Jacob Loose, founder of the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company and philanthropist. She made the gift in 1926 and gave the park to the city with five conditions: no roadways, no monuments or statues; no golf links or baseball diamonds; and the park must remain a park.
